I studied philosophy and Chinese at Melbourne University.
How important was formal study to your career?
Hard to say. It definitely exposed me to a lot of ideas and gave me an appreciation of the importance of research.
Is it important these days for emergent practitioners to have degrees?
Personally, I have found being self taught a huge asset.
Why this industry and when did you realise you wanted to work in it?
I worked for a while in Europe and I realised that everything comes together in film - visual art, performance, technology, collaboration, communication.
How did you get your first career break?
I was given a Nintendo spot to direct based on pure enthusiasm.
What were the three most significant evolutions/changes in your working life?
When I started making enough money to buy any book I wanted, things took off for me.
Did anything jeopardise your career in its early stages?
Promising more than you can deliver will sink you faster than anything.
What is the most important you learnt early in your career that is still relevant to you now?
Your success will be in direct proportion to the amount of people who put their trust in you.
