Description
Some non-indigenous people are led to believe, through various forms of media, that all Aboriginals are criminals who drink and participate in mindless violence and riots and so they refuse to fully support any media organisation with any connections to Aboriginals. It can be argued that indigenous media organisations are for the indigenous community so why does this lack of support from the non-indigenous community matter, but the role of these indigenous media organisations is to promote the true indigenous culture to the world as part of the Australian culture, which both the indigenous and non indigenous communities are part of. So it is very important that each community fully understands the culture and traditions of the other community to be able to effectively function as a united Australian community.
For my creative piece I decided to create an abstract piece displaying how hard it is for the Aboriginal community to escape from the mask encouraged by the media, portraying them as drunk, criminals and unrespectable citizens of Australia. The left side of the face represents this masked portrayal from which the aboriginal community is labelled with. The right side represents that even if they do succeed in escaping from this portrayal they are still viewed as black and nothing more than that.
