Description
A cultural identity is the identity of a group or culture and a key element in understanding a persons cultural identity is to have the ability to distinguish between the many different cultures. So how can we determine what cultural identity, if any, makes up a certain persons identity? Visually speaking, designs can be a very good method of establishing this identity connection, which is exactly what I wished to demonstrate in my creative piece. I chose to use the template of a butterfly as the canvas for my four different cultural designs, Samoan, Chinese, Aboriginal and Indian, simply because a butterfly is a beautiful living organism. I believe that this mirrors culture as it is also very real and living, in a metaphorical sense. I mean we can taste culture, we can see culture, we can hear culture and we can even feel culture, physically, emotionally and even spiritually.
The designs displayed on the wings of each butterfly are different, making them unique, which mirrors the fact that even though common characteristics are clear markers of a shared culture it is by noticing the difference within other cultures that truly identifies a culture different to yours. The purpose of these designs isnt restricted to just being decorative, they hold certain meanings and display certain aspects of the culture, from which it is used in. An example of this is Aboriginal designs, which often serve the purpose of telling stories to aboriginals and non-aboriginals. Another example is Hindu designs, which are predominantly circular in form and shape to symbolise the deep spiritual connection that the Indian culture has.
